Preview: Multi-Node Warehouse Allocation and Route Optimization
Note: This is an internal architectural draft outlining planned functionality for our upcoming v2 logistics release.
As brands expand from a single central warehouse into distributed regional fulfillment hubs (e.g. North, South, and West distribution centers), order routing complexity grows quadratically.
The Multi-Node Challenge
When a buyer in Bengaluru orders three items:
- Item A is in stock at the Mumbai hub.
- Item B and C are in stock at the Chennai hub.
The platform must dynamically solve an optimization puzzle:
- Should the order split into two separate courier consignments?
- Does the margin on the order justify paying two separate shipping fees?
- Can an internal inter-warehouse transfer consolidate the items before dispatch?
Upcoming Architectural Strategy
We are implementing a shortest-path graph optimization service that balances shipping costs against customer promised delivery dates:
- Single Hub Preference: If a single warehouse can fulfill 100% of the basket within SLA, route entirely through that hub.
- Smart Splitting: If splitting is mandatory, allocate separate carrier tracking numbers while presenting the customer with a unified tracking timeline.
